How to celebrate International Women’s Day
February 24, 2023
International Women’s Day (IWD) is the perfect time to let the women in your life know just how much they mean to you. Set up in 1909 and taking place on 8th March annually, International Women’s Day aims to create a world ‘free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive’. With the big day coming up, we’ve got together a few ways you can make the most of an important global event.
Gift a bouquet
You didn’t expect anything else from us, did you? Of course, we believe that a gorgeous arrangement hand-tied by our wonderful local team of florists is the best way to add some meaning to an already special day. Whether it’s your mum, somebody at work or your partner, a bouquet can bring a big smile to the important women in your life. As IWD takes place in Spring, we suggest having a look around our stunning springtime collection, packed with dazzling colours suitable for the season, such as these Pick Me Up Posies. Feel free to take a visit to our The Flower Studio Marlow shop too for some first-hand advice!
Spread awareness on your socials
Social media is one of the best ways to spread awareness and drum up support for causes that mean a lot to you. Whether it’s Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, we suggest shouting out those women that have added meaning to your life. A teacher, a parent or a relationship – the possibilities are endless. Talking positively about people is a great way to trigger a conversation about important issues, as well as help you learn more about IWD. After all, talking is the first step we can take on the path to education.
Start a book club
Literature is a fantastic way to discuss women’s status in society going back centuries. With that in mind, why not start a book club with family and friends? After collectively reading a book, such as The Handmaid’s Tale or A Room of One’s Own, write down some notes about your thoughts and ask everybody to do the same. Trust us – after a few minutes, conversations about those essential issues will start flowing. IWD as an organisation also have heaps of literature and learning resources on their site, helping to spark important conversations between your friends and family.
Donate & fundraise
Money can make a difference, there’s no doubt about that. Fundraising and donating to one of IWF’s chosen charities is a genuinely impactful way to directly help women in need today. Running a marathon or climbing a mountain are examples of traditional forms of fundraising, but the way your raise money doesn’t have to be that intense. Think about what means a lot to you and ask people to donate to something you are genuinely passionate about: not only will this be more rewarding for yourself, but it will probably raise more money too. If you’re unable to fundraise, why not send a donation of your choice? Every little helps.
